Gentle Artist Of The San Gabriel Valley

California Preserved Through The Life And Paintings Of Walter P. Temple Jr.

By Josette Laura Temple and Laura W. Brundige

Walter P. Temple, Jr. was a life-long resident of the San Gabriel Valley, which lies to the east of Los Angeles, California. His great grandfather, William Workman, in partnership with John Rowland, led the famous 1841 overland expedition to the area. His father founded Temple City, California. Temple witnessed life on the old ranchos, the proliferation of oil wells, and Southern California's metamorphosis from a gentle land of hills and wildflowers to a seething network of highways and busy cities. As the area developed, familiar old landmarks had to be destroyed to make room for the future, so Temple began to record their beauty in sketches, watercolors, and oils. His daughter Josette has graciously shared his legacy with us in a collection that tells her father's story and the story of the valley he loved.
